Jeep built its reputation sometime back in World War 2, with its toughness and workhorse design. Nothing more then a bare bone, multipurpose and a light vehicle. While judging from today’s Jeep, we see a totally different impression from the original model, but that trend is still being carried forward by Wrangler.

When you look at a Jeep Wrangler, its easy to tell that this vehicle is not for everyone. The basic bodywork, practical style, the retro look and open cockpit give it a look which is specifically for those who have an off-road mind set or looking for some adventures.

The TJ was launched in 1997, with some major upgrades from its predecessors, and that’s why for many it is a most reliable off-roader. It kept the retro style of original Jeep, flat simple panels, slatted grille, cutaway doors, open guards and fold flat windshield.

There are many noticeable changes between TJ and its ancestors; one of the major changes is the coil spring suspension. The previous model used to have suspended over cart springs making it one rock hard ride. The new coil suspension did improve the ride comfort a lot, without impacting Wrangler ability on tough off-road tracks. Also with an extra 180mm wheel travel, the ability to off-road was also enhanced.

Apart from the major changes to the exterior, there are many noticeable changes under the hood as well. But it has the same six-cylinder engine with a 4.0 Liter push rod overhead valve. If you see technology wise it is pretty out-dated, but it does the job quite magnificently keeping performance and fuel economy at a useful level. Apart from the major modifications it has a standard manual five-speed gearbox.

The Wrangler TJ was design for everyday driver who also want to take his ride for some off road action or even wants to enjoy hard-core adventures on the trails. Wrangler has the ability to handle any type of trails with the right suspension upgrade and tires.

When looking fo a used Jeep Wrangler TJ make sure to carefully check the underbody for any damage. Some of the major things to notice are the bash plates, which are to survive rough off-road impacts usually with rocks.

Over all TJ wrangler is a mechanically solid and a very reliable vehicle. The engine does a great job and stands up well, as well as the drive lines and transmissions.
