Jeep CJ Models Identification

If you are a Jeep fan then you have heard of Jeep CJs. Focus of this blog will be to provide some additional information related to three Jeep CJ Models.

First of all “CJ” in Jeep CJ stands for “Civilian Jeep”. Now a days you will often see or hear about Jeep CJ-5, Jeep CJ-7 and Jeep CJ-8.

Jeep CJ-5 were sold between 1954-1983.
Jeep CJ-7 were sold between 1976-1986.
Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler were sold between 1981-86
.

Bests way to distinguish between Jeep CJ-5, CJ-7 and CJ-8 is the Wheelbase.

Jeep CJ-5 Wheelbase Dimensions were: 81 in (2,057 mm) (1954-1971) and 83.5 in (2,121 mm) (1972-1983)
Jeep CJ-7 were slightly longer with Wheelbase length of 93.3 in (2,370 mm)
Jeep CJ-8 were the longest of the three with total wheelbase length of 103 in (2,616 mm).

As mentioned Jeep CJ-8 Scramblers were introduced in 1981. Since it had a longer wheelbase it could easily pass for a small pick-up truck. Only 27,792 were built between 1981-85 so these Jeep CJ-8 are extremely unique if you can find one in original condition.

Jeep CJ Body Parts are pretty much competible between 76-86 Jeep CJ5, CJ7 and CJ8. There are few exception when it comes to Jeep CJ8 since these have the long wheelbase, some body components like Side and Corner Panels for Jeep CJ8 will be different
